Health Care Reform *&* Tax UpdatesWhat's New With Health Care Reform.Two of the biggest changes in health care reform this year are the small business tax credit and children being able to remain on their parents' insurance policy through age 26. The small business credit is for businesses with up to 25 employees. An employer with more than 25 employees could qualify if some or all the workers are part-time. For 2010, the maximum credit is 35% of premiums paid by businesses and 25% of premiums paid by tax-exempt organizations. The new age dependent limit (age 26) goes into effect for policies that begin on or after September 23, 2010. Most carriers in California have already adopted this new age limit rule before they are required to ensure a smoother transition with the new law. It is important to note that most of the changes with the new health care legislation will be implemented over a period of time. As a result, it will take time for regulatory agencies to set up the necessary programs/mechanisms to ensure that the new laws are being implemented correctly.
